IVF is riddled with inaccuracies. Dr. Simi Sood, Neelkanth IVF busts some popular misconceptions

Due to medical advancements, many infertile couples who have been unable to conceive naturally, can now have a child using In-vitro fertilization, commonly called IVF . Despite the high success rate of IVF, many people are unwilling to accept this treatment due to lack of adequate awareness, affordability and access. What is the IVF process? Is it safe? Does it result in multiple pregnancies? Is it only for rich and famous? Clearing up these types of erroneous notions is crucial as it will assist to remove the social stigma associated with IVF treatment.

The following are a few of the IVF fallacies that IVF physicians deal with world over and Dr. Simi Sood Director, Sr. Consultant Reproductive Medicine & Fertility Specialist, Neelkanth IVF- a pioneer with over 19 years of experience in the field of Assisted Reproduction Procedures (ARP) debunks them with relevant facts.

Myth 1: IVF babies are not like other normal babies.

Incorrect. In IVF, the risk of an abnormal foetus and birth abnormalities is the same as it is in the general population. People believe that IVF babies are created unnaturally in laboratories. Doctors are not manufacturing babies; rather, they are supporting couples who are having difficulty conceiving naturally. The fertilisation of an egg by sperm takes place outside the body in a laboratory, but the embryo (fertilised egg) is then transplanted back into the female's uterus and grows into a baby. Because the process is so natural, an IVF baby is just like any other baby.

Myth 2: This procedure is only for older couples.

Even though age is an important factor in fertility, this technique is often just as effective in women of all ages in the post-menopausal group as it is in younger women.

Myth 3: IVF patients must be admitted to the hospital.

On the day of the egg retrieval, the patient must be hospitalised for one day only. Also, on the day of embryo transfer the procedure takes 10-15 minutes, following which the patient must rest for a few hours and that's all. You are not required to be admitted for a few days.

Myth 4: The success rate of IVF is 100 %.

In couples under the age of thirty-five, the success rate of IVF is approximately 60%-70%. In addition, the success rate of IVF is influenced by factors such as age of the patient, ovarian reserve, condition of the uterus and sperm morphology

Myth 5: IVF pregnancies result in twin pregnancies

While multiple pregnancies are common in IVF, with newer technology like single blastocyst embryo transfer can be done to ensure singleton pregnancy.

Myth 6: IVF is not a safe procedure.

IVF, on the other hand, is a well-monitored, controlled, and relatively safe technique with few problems. Rare complications like Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) after IVF can cause weight gain or abdominal distension. Neelkanth, however, is proud to be a "OHSS free clinic." Additionally, the aforementioned issues are negligible after following the most recent injectable regimen.

Myth 7: All births are caesarean section in IVF pregnancies.

IVF pregnancy is equivalent to a natural pregnancy, according to a report. A C-section may be required in some cases due to problems. These issues could be comparable to those that arise during spontaneous pregnancies.

Myth 8: IVF is a treatment for the wealthy and famous.
